A radical innovation in interactive design, the exquisite Z Island features multimedia equipment, sound actuators and LED lights that enable the user to browse the internet, watch television, listen to music or create a specific ambience using different coloured lighting and aromatherapy. Each of these functions is controlled by centralised touch-sensitive panel made of Dupont Corian, a versatile, translucent material that allows touch sensitive areas and a large display area. This is the ideal interface for the Z Island kitchen as one can use it while cooking and wipe it clean later.
Internationally regarded architect Zaha Hadid is best known for her convention-shattering, modernist designs. Hadid defies traditional rules of space – walls, ceilings, right angles – in favour of a newkind of spatiality, of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry, designed to embody the chaos of modern life. In her complex melodramatic structures, Hadid embraces the newfound freedom brought by the CAD (Computer-aided design) revolution.
Hadid and Waldemeyer have combined interactive technology with cutting-edge design to create a kitchen that is both practical and sensual whilst emphasizing the fluid nature of the design.
THE Z ISLAND KITCHEN MADE ITS DEBUT DURING MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2006 AND WAS LATER ON DISPLAY IN THE NEW YORK GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM.
